Bassa has cut off supplies saying

the power utility is still honouring its contractual agreement with Zimbabwe to supply 50 megawatts.
HCB yesterday also denied that it had switched off Zimbabwe.
This is contrary to reports confirmed by Energy and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma in the media yesterday that HCB had switched off Zimbabwe.
HCB board member Rosaque Guale was quoted by international news agencies yesterday saying they had not switched off Zimbabwe.
“We would like to inform you that we have not cut electricity to Zimbabwe. That information is misinformed,” he said.
Zesa spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira said: “Zesa and HCB of Mozambique have a power purchase agreement of 50MW firm and 100MW-non firm.
“This means that HCB contractually should supply us with 50MW continuously and 100MW as and when available. HCB is honouring the firm part of the contract for the meantime.”
He said Zesa owed HCB $US78 million. Mr Gwasira said the power utility’s decision to switch off its defaulters was working.
He said the response from most defaulters was encouraging.
“The response has been very encouraging though a lot more still needs to be done since we still have a huge debt overhang.
“We enjoy a very cordial relationship with HCB, but like all service providers, there is a real need to pay for service rendered.
“Zesa needs to pay for electricity it imports, and likewise customers should pay for electricity supplied. That’s the only way to ensure security of supplies and introduce planning as regards load shedding,” he said.
Mr Gwasira said Government was committed to ensure security of supplies. Mr Gwasira said the increase in load shedding announced by Zesa on Wednesday was as a result of depressed power generation at Hwange Thermal Station and the country depressed capacity to generate more power. Several suburbs in Harare have gone for long hours as the power utility struggles to distribute the available electricity equitably.
Zimbabwe needs 2 200 megawatts of electricity and as of yesterday local power stations were generating 1,100 megawatts. Zesa had said it was planning to introduce pre-paid meters to improve its revenue collection.
